Jonathan Monaghan
GOTHAM
solo show

Gallery 22,48 m2 is pleased to present Jonathan Monaghan's (born in 1986 in New York) new body of works for his first solo show in France entitled "GOTHAM". Jonathan creates sculptures, prints and installations showing video animations that challenge the boundaries between the real, the fantasy, and the virtual. Psycho-sexual, seductive and also menacing, his work evokes collective fears surrounding authority, wealth and technology.
In the looping video Scroll we are presented with an endless column of plastic, architecture, and fabric. Taking on organic qualities, the structure repeatedly spores futuristic seeds, suggesting technology itself as a reproducing life form and highlighting an ambiguous relationship with the natural.
Monaghan manifests his virtual architecture in a series of inkjet prints and 3D-printed sculptures. To create these works, Monaghan
painstakingly transforms luxury apartment buildings erected during the explosion of wealth in the late 19th into lusciously detailed and surreal vignettes. Monaghan's digital imagery mixes these elaborate Beaux Art facades with luxury fabrics, futuristic contraptions, and fur, thus exploring contemporary desire and technological dehumanization.
